DEUTZ 912 Series Buying Guide: F3L912, F4L912 and F6L912
The 912 series is bought member by member, not by family name. This guide shows the listed evidence for each member and the specification method that works for all of them.
The family frame
The FL912 family is listed across a band of 14–85 kW, with the FL912W variant family at 33–66 kW, inside the wider 912 series page of this site. Its members on record are the F3L912, F4L912, F5L912 and F6L912. That band is wide enough to cover small gensets, pumps, compressors and a long list of construction and agricultural machines — which is precisely why "a 912" is not a specification. The member code and the rating point are.
F4L912: the member with a complete listing
The F4L912 is the family's reference because its listing is complete: US$2,875.00 per piece at a minimum of 1 piece; bore and stroke 100 × 120 mm; displacement 3.77 litres; weight 300 kg; and four rating points — 32 kW at 1,500 rpm, 38 kW at 1,800 rpm, 46 kW at 2,300 rpm and 51 kW at 2,500 rpm. Study those four numbers and you understand 912 buying. The same engine is a 32 kW engine or a 51 kW engine depending on the speed your application runs at, and any comparison with a competing engine that does not state speeds on both sides is meaningless.
Practically: a 1,500 rpm application (a 50 Hz genset, a pump set) buys the 32 kW row. A machine application at 2,300–2,500 rpm buys the upper rows. When a supplier quotes you an F4L912, the first check is which row the quote is standing on; the second is that the price in the quote matches the listed price or explains its movement; the third is scope — what is fitted to the engine as delivered.
F3L912: buy it as an engine, or as a pumping set
The F3L912 carries the family's most interesting dual identity. As an engine it is a listed member of the 14–85 kW family. As a package it is the driving engine of the catalogue's diesel water pumping set, whose published table pairs it with pump combinations — the 125-100-400B at 21 kW, 105 cubic metres per hour and 39.4 metres of head at 1,500 rpm, plus higher-flow rows at lower heads on the water pumps page. If your need is pumping, buy the set on its duty point and the F3L912 question answers itself. If your need is a bare engine, specify the rating point you require and have the model's figures at that point confirmed in the quote — the bare-engine table itself is not published, so those figures come from the enquiry.
F6L912 and the top of the family
The F6L912 is the family's large member, sitting toward the top of the 14–85 kW band. The buying method is identical — member code plus rating point, confirmed in writing — with one addition: check the neighbours before you commit. The FL913 family (34–141 kW) overlaps the 912's upper band, and for applications near the top of the 912 range the correct engine may be a 913. Families are cheap to compare at the enquiry stage and expensive to confuse at the installation stage.
The specification checklist
- Member code exactly as designated (F3L912, F4L912, F5L912, F6L912 — or the W variant family).
- Rating point: the power you need at the speed your application runs.
- For the F4L912: the quote's row checked against the four published points, and the listed price of US$2,875.00 confirmed as current.
- Scope of supply as delivered, and the delivery and warranty terms (listed for complete engines at 15–30 days and 1 year or 1,200 hours) restated for your unit.
- Parts route noted for the future: the 912 series has its own group in the Deutz parts catalogue.
Buyers who run that checklist get the engine they specified. Buyers who buy "a 912" get whichever member was easiest to supply — and discover the difference at installation, which is the most expensive classroom in engineering.
How the 912 sits in the wider air-cooled range
No family is bought in isolation, so place the 912 before you commit to it. Below it sits the FL511 family (6.8–25.7 kW), whose listed single model, the F2L511, covers the smallest air-cooled duties. Above the 912, the FL913 (34–141 kW) and FL914 (41–118 kW) families overlap its upper half and continue beyond it, and the FL413 and FL513 families serve the heavy end. The overlap is intentional in the manufacturer's range and useful to you: a requirement that lands awkwardly at a member's limit in one family often lands mid-table in the next, where the engine works with margin instead of at its edge. When you enquire, it costs nothing to ask for the neighbouring family's comparable member to be quoted alongside — two written quotes on the same rating point are the cheapest engineering review you will ever buy.
Ownership: parts, knowledge and the long tail
A 912 bought today will need parts for as long as it works, and the series is well served: the Deutz parts catalogue carries a dedicated 912 series group, and the ordering method — series plus part number, set out in the parts catalog guide — applies unchanged. Budget the ownership side at purchase time: a set of service consumables and the wear items your duty cycle consumes, ordered with the engine or immediately after, while the model and its numbers are already open on your desk. Fleets standardised on the 912 also gain the quiet benefit of accumulated knowledge — every repair record written against one member's designation teaches the workshop about the family. That is the real reason this series anchors so many fleets: not any single figure in its table, but the depth of the system around it, which this catalogue's structure — family page, member listings, series-grouped parts — reproduces faithfully.
One page to keep
Before the enquiry is sent, print or save the F4L912 page and the family table from the 912 series page. Between them they hold every published figure this guide has used — the family band, the members, and the one complete member listing — and they are the reference against which the quote should be checked when it arrives. If the quote's figures agree with them, proceed; where they differ, the difference gets explained in writing before the order, not discovered after it. That habit, applied to this family, will serve for every engine on this site.
